Unbounce lets you automatically push your new leads directly into your email lists on Mailchimp. The Unbounce Mailchimp integration is designed to make it as simple as possible to store your leads with your favourite email service provider. A few reasons why it's cool:
Watch the short video below to learn how to start sending your lead data straight to your Mailchimp account.
Read up about our "Field Mapping" feature that allows you to send any field in your Unbounce form, to any field in your MailChimp list.
Along with your form fields, we will also send you the Page ID, Variant letter, the date of submission, and the visitor's IP address. In order to receive these values in your list, you'll need to set up some custom fields in your MailChimp list. To do this, follow the steps in this article: Capture Page ID, Variant Letter and Custom Date in your MailChimp Lists.

I wish there were written instructions instead of just video
Hi Alex - we'll try and get some written suggestions for MailChimp along with the video. Thanks for the suggestion!
It keeps saying user name and password could not be found..but it is my correct mail chimp login info?
Hey Kai - I've seen this issue a couple times before and I need to look into what the cause is for MailChimp denying some user names. As a workaround, you can always use your API key instead of logging in. When you're setting up the MC integration, click the link above the username field labeled "Click here if you already know your API Key". To find your API key, log into MailChimp and in the top-left "Account" dropdown menu, go to "API Keys & Info". From here you should be able to copy and paste your API key (or create one if it doesn't already exist).
Let us know if you need any more help with that.
Hey Kai (and anyone else having this problem) - just an update: MailChimp is making some changes that are going to mean we can no longer allow you to log in with your MC username and password, so we'll be taking that step out altogether and you'll need to use an API key from now on. This can be found at the following link: http://admin.mailchimp.com/account/api-key-popup
Hi Carter - Before I read your latest message, I tried to connect my MailChimp password using the username and password option. This now appears to be stuck in a loop saying "Hold on, we're talking to MailChimp..." with the loading animation, which is there even when I logout and back in again!
How can I stop it trying to login this way, so that I can redo it with my API Key? I'd really appreciate a prompt response here, as I'm up against a tight deadline.
Many thanks in advance!
Struggling with the same 'caught in the loop' issue as Gunnar. I do have a Mailchimp API key but can't actually enter it as it's going straight into the 'Hold on, we're talking to MailChimp...' screen. My weekend has now started (London, UK) but would be great to be able to setup & test the integration next week. Cheers
I have since tried another campaign with my MailChimp API Key, and have the same issue, it's stuck in the loop.
Hey guys - my apologies for the hold up connecting to your MailChimp accounts. We've located the issue and fixed it, so you should be able to connect with your API keys are per usual. Let me know (or mail support@unbounce.com) if things are still not fixed for you.
hi there - is there a way to disable the confirmation email mailchimp sends to new subscribers - i.e. users submit the unbounce form and that's it? thanks!
Hey Julie - unfortunately not. MailChimp is pretty strict when it comes to spam which is why they enforce either the welcome email or the double opt-in confirmation email. Sorry!
Hi Carter
I've already used the Mailchimp integration in the past and love it. It seems though with my latest Unbounce landing page that there's an issue. I've authorised with my Mailchimp API key and done some test runs. Even though it's showing me the leads in Unbounce there are none in Mailchimp.
I've chosen the 'welcome email' only option, could that be it? Are there any issues you are aware of?
Cheers
Frank
Hi Frank,
Drop us an email to support@unbounce.com and we'll try to help troubleshoot your issue. There are a few things that could be going wrong here - we're actually close to releasing a lot nicer error handling for our integrations (mostly MailChimp at the moment) to help make troubleshooting problems like this easier for both you and us.
Cheers,
Carter
I sent this to support but figured I'd try here as well. Is there any way to send leads directly to a group within a Mailchimp list, rather than to the general list itself? I have come up with a workaround using the Page ID field. Let's say my main list is "Pets" and I have groups for "dogs", "cats", "birds" and landing pages for each of the groups. Once a week, I log in to Mailchimp and sort my main list by Page ID. If the Page ID for "dogs" is 1, then I select all email addresses with that Page ID and do a bulk action "Add to group..." in Mailchimp. This is cumbersome, but it works.
Another possibility is to simply send a campaign and use the Page ID as a segmenting criterion. So I can select the group "dogs" and the Page ID "1" (for dogs) as two criteria, and I'll be sure to hit everyone that is interested in dogs.
Both of these workarounds are cumbersome and not automated. I'd love to have the option of choosing a group when passing leads to Mailchimp.
Carter,
Any idea on when you will have different named fileds integrated with MailChimp. I am in need of capturing website adresses and phone numbers, but I will have to stick with first and last names for now.
Hi Joseph - We're working on integrating one more EMS and then field mapping is next in the pipe for our integrations developer -- I can't give a hard ETA yet, but we're certainly looking forward to getting it out there soon.
Carter,
Thanks at least I know it is on the "To-Do' list.
looks also that copying a page and copying mailchimp integration does not works, i need to setup again mailchimp integration on every duplicated page. Works as expected or did i do something wrong ?
Hey Thierry, everything should be working as expected but please send us an email to support@unbounce.com with your page URL so that we can help troubleshoot your specific situation. Thanks!
Carter,
on the topic similar to Julie's question... While importing my leads into MailChimp, I am forced to choose a "Confirmation email" or "Welcome email", required by MC.
After I select either option, do emails go immediately to all my leads? I only want to import my contacts into MC at this point. I intend to build my forms in MC designer later. It's not clear in your integration form what exactly happens after I connect to MC via my API Key.
Thanks!
Hi Natasha,
Are you manually importing leads yourself? If so, doing that through MailChimp is the way to go, not through Unbounce. They have tools built for importing lists of emails. But to answer your question, when you set up the integration with MailChimp and one of your Unbounce pages, every time a visitor fills out the form on your page they will be added to your MailChimp list and sent an email (depending on which email type you choose) . MailChimp is strict about sending emails to ensure the subscribers have opted-in, and prevent MailChimp users from importing lists of emails who haven't agreed to be added to a list.
Does that answer your question a bit better?
Carter,
Does Unbounce integrate custom fields with any of the other integrations (eg Constant Contact, AWeber etc)? For example, I have a lead gen form that captures mobile phone and postcode (aka zip code), which I'd like transferred across to the email marketing system.
Thanks
Hi Phil - we are working on a solution for that right now actually, called "Field Mapping" which will allow you to map fields from your Unbounce form to specific fields in your 3rd party integration lists (starting with MailChimp). We're hoping to release it this summer, I will definitely update the thread when it's ready.
Hi Carter,
Any news about Field Mapping? For those of us using other languages than english will be great.
Regards
Hi Julio - yes we are getting pretty close. Most of the dirty work is done and Aaron (our lead developer on this project) is just working on some UI and testing. We're hoping to push this out pretty soon (likely talking weeks, not months).
Hi, I'm waiting for the Field Mapping too.
Carter, I have a somewhat similar question to Julie's and Natasha's. I understand it is a MC requirement that either a Welcome email or a confirmation email get sent to ensure that subscribers have opted in. I really get that. However, my question is, how can I personalise that email? I want to take control over the content of that email, and it appears there are no ways to modify it, or even see it before it gets sent out to our subscribers/customers. Also, I'd like you to confirm if it is correct that leads from Unbounce can only be imported to a MC list and NOT a group? I couldn't find much information on this matter.
Thank you in advance for your time.
I've just run a campaign with Unbounce & Mailchimp so hopefully my 'two cents' of knowledge can help Julie, Natasha and John.
I've opted for the 'Welcome Email' which you can edit in MC under the 'forms' menu of your list. This allows to pull in merge fields you've just asked people to submit via Unbounce - and which are matched against your list fields - to be used in the email. In addition the email can be designed using the normal HTML and form editor or by copying CSS.
In my case I used it to send a personalised 'thank you for your interest in our latest product' email with a link to update their profile. I prefer to ask for as little detail as possible on landing pages, i.e. fname & email and ask additional details via the welcome email.
Natasha, if you manually import an existing list into Mailchimp it won't send out welcome emails to any of them; these are only triggered by subscriptions via Unbounce.
I'm non-technical and couldn't write a piece of code if my life depended on it. But found the Mailchimp / Unbounce integration pretty straightforward.
Hope that helps.
Frank, your post has helped me a great deal! Thanks for sharing. But Carter, would love to get an update on whether the new fields will be up and running soon!
We need more fields to track our data and manage our list. Right now, we're having to take the Unbounce data and manually add our own data, then import in Mailchimp. The problem is, then we don't get the 'double opt-in' process that MailChimp recommends, and we are running into high bounce and spam rates.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE add more fields! Thanks in advance. =)
Our field mapping feature is verrry close Enrique! A few bugs to flush out first but we are hoping to have it live before too long (hopefully within a couple of weeks). I promise we'll keep this thread updated as soon as the feature is available to you.
Any word on the Field Mapping feature? Very much looking forward to it!
--Ben
Hi Ben, we have yet to officially announce it, but we added field mapping as an Unbounce Labs feature last week. Take a look at our field mapping documentation. You can enable Field Mapping by visiting the Labs section: Account >> Unbounce Labs.
I'm getting an integration error "Wrong type NilClass. Not allowed!" - is there info on how to fix this that I'm missing?
Hi Marc,
This is an unfortunately poor error description on our behalf.
Normally this means the email form field has been renamed to something that doesn't contain "email", ie., "e-mail" or "electronic mail" or something similar.
This is definitely a high priority item that we're hoping to address very soon!
Any update on the email field issue when the field name is not 'email'? Wufoo requires a different email field name. Thanks!
Hi Simon,
You should be able to work around this problem using field mapping.
Here's how to enable field mapping.
Here's how to create a custom field map.
I hope that's what you're looking for!
I'm looking to customize the MailChimp list forms before integrating, but there aren't any list forms in MailChimp specifically entitled "Welcome Email (without a confirmation link)" or "Confirmation Email (with a double option confirmation link)". Does this refer to the "Final 'Welcome' Email" and the "Opt-in Confirmation Email"? I know it might seem obvious–just making sure.
Also, is this integration option ideal for someone who's selected a Consultation template vs. a Sign Up template, since the auto-email is designed to confirm or welcome their subscription as opposed to their free booking?
Thanks!
Hi Chris - yes to confirm below I have laid out which emails are equivalent to one another from Unbounce to MailChimp.
Sending leads to Mailchimp GROUPS
Just wanted to post here since I didn't find an updated answer on this.
When setting up MC integration, Unbounce will automatically detect if you have Groups set up in the list you're sending to.
This only happens when you first make the link, so you have to cancel the MC integration on your UB page, and then redo it.
Hope that helps any future searchers on this question :)
