Triggering MailChimp Autoresponders for new Leads

Autoresponder emails give you the ability to automatically send emails to leads at set times, or after specific events have occurred.

There are plenty of reasons why you would want to use an autoresponder;

  • Delivering an ebook
  • Sending an ecourse automatically over days or weeks
  • Offering a product demo or special offer a few days after downloading content
  • Inviting people to download older content they may not have seen
  • many, many more...

Example: After downloading two of your ebooks Fred now belongs to two groups in the “I Love Chimps Newsletter” list. 1 week later, he receives an email with a 25% discount on your ecourse.

Changing MailChimp’s default Welcome email

If you wish to modify the initial email your Leads receive then you will need to update the "Welcome" email. To do this simply follow the steps below.

  1. Select your list.
  2. Open the Create Forms tab.
  3. Select Final “Welcome” Email from the Forms & Response Emails drop-down.

  4. Edit the Welcome email to your heart's content!
  5. Click Save & Exit once you have finished updating the Welcome email.

That's it! Your leads will now receive a customized Welcome email when signing up to your list.

Will this actually wait a full day before sending the autoresponse? I am looking for something much more real-time.

Hey Andy - At this point I don't think MailChimp offers instant autoresponders, but it sounds like it's on their radar. You can see a bit more conversation about it here and here. If I hear anything different from them I will update this thread.

Cheers,
Carter

cool -- in the meantime, if speed is of the essence, would you suggest going for the Mailchimp double-opt-in option route? Would that allow for an instant custom message after confirmation?

Well as long as you aren't looking to segment the instant response - you can always edit the Final "Welcome" Email which will be sent instantly (regardless of double-opt-in). If you don't do the double-opt-in, and wish to segment and trigger auto-responders later, be sure to capture the UBDATE value (Unbounce Signup Date) in your list.

To edit the Final "Welcome" Email, go to the Lists tab, choose the "Forms" link under your list, and then choose "Final Welcome Email" from the dropdown menu. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the posts, guys. Was helpful. Just linked Unbounced leads to MailChimp. Working beautifully!

It was simple enough to link to MailChimp once I created an API key in MailChimp.

It'd be nice if Unbounce could build-in this feature - just a simple "Send an email to a respondent" feature that sends an email to someone that submits an email address via a landing page form. I'd suggest you include this feature only on paid accounts - I'd pay for it!

Hey Cooper - Interesting idea and something we'll definitely consider. Thanks!

I too am looking for a Real Time Auto-responder that will email 3 PDF files immediately and then send out timed follow up autoresponses. Any chance this is going to happen?

Or do you integrate with iContact?

Hey Chad -- iContact is on our list of email services that we're hoping to integrate with as soon as possible. No clear deadline yet, but knowing that people want it helps us prioritize. Go add your vote to it over here - we've just started populating that list, so there are a ton more to come.

Haven't completed the testing yet but you can change the MailChimp setting to 0 days after Unbounce signup date.  According to their interface it will send the same day, though I don't know how instantaneous it is.

HI,

I imagine that many of us want to send a PDF immediately as an opt-in to our lists. I was counting on unbounce to be the support system to do this. The option to integrate leads to an outside service is great but I could just build a webpage and collect them and export easily enough.

It was requested above in early 2011 to add a-

"Send an email to a respondent" feature that sends an email to someone that submits an email address via a landing page form. I'd suggest you include this feature only on paid accounts - I'd pay for it!

I would like to add that I would not pay for Unbounce nor recommend it to my clients until you include this feature. This is a great system, but I'd say this is a major missing element. Thanks for your consideration.

Hey Elias, I'll address a couple of your points separately:

1) Sending a customer a PDF immediately: I'm not sure if you're aware or not, but we do have a feature that allows you to upload any file (PDF included) and link to it from the confirmation dialog that pops up after a user submits a form. This file i served up securely, so the user can't share the link with anyone, it's reserved only for them (and has an expiration time limit.) I know it's not exactly the solution you're looking for (having the link sent in an email) but this way you're sure the user will receive it, there's not change of the email being blocked as spam. Check out this support article to see how it works...

2) The ability to send a basic email to a new lead as a core Unbounce feature: Incorporating this as a core feature in Unbounce is something that we've considered, but it's not quite as simple as it sounds. The reason companies like MailChimp are so successful is because they are dedicated to jumping through all the hoops out there to make sure you have high deliverability rates. It's hard work maintaining mail servers that successfully deliver mail to such a variety of email accounts. At this point, we've decided to stay focused on building a great landing page tool and let the other companies focus on delivering email. This isn't to say we might not leverage a partner a bit further in the future and still incorporate basic email responders as a core feature, but that might be a little ways down the line.

Thanks for the feedback though, I hope the PDF download option helps solve some of your pain and gives you a reason to use our service.

Cheers,
Carter

Carter,

Thanks for your prompt reply (and from a real person good support team)!

1) I figured there had to be something. This is great, however the only drawback is the email/info could be fake and we still give them the download, but I'll use it since it appears to be the easiest option.

2) This explains it. As a consultant I always guide my clients to focus on what they do best and outsource the rest. Sometimes we not be aware of the little technical requirements to make something happen in the new online universe. Thanks for the clarity.

Best Regards,

Elias Arjan

Hey Elias, happy to have provided you with some answers! It's a good point you make about not verifying the validity of the email address and info before providing a link to the file. We'll keep that in mind when we do any improvements to this whole feature. Thanks again for your feedback!

Hello Unbounce. I have created several variants of my page. Is there a way to configure unique auto-responders for each variant via mailchimp?

Hi Rasool - since page integrations like MailChimp are configured to execute with the same settings on all variants of a page, it is not actually possible to have the different variants trigger different auto-responders directly from the settings in Unbounce. What you can potentially do is add an additional filter in MailChimp so that the 'page_variant' value is passed through to Mailchimp, and set to trigger different auto-responders.

Another way for configure this setup would actually be to separate the variants out to different landing pages. Once they are individual landing pages with their own integration settings, they can be set to use different auto-responders from your MailChimp account. The downfall here of course would be that you would no longer be testing the variants against one another in an actual AB test - you would be manually comparing the stats from each page.

Hello Unbounce,

We are creating an autoresponder for a free trial offer landing page. We would like the autoresponder to send a code that people can use to access the free trial. The code must be unique to the user.

Is that possible to do?

Thanks,

Robert

Hi,
I want to integrate with Mail Chimp, but I need a way to segment our responses immediately. My landing page asks a question with answers  A,B or C.

I want to put people into different mail chimp lists [A,B, C]  according to which answer they pick, and to have a different autoresponse [A,B or C] matched to each group.

Is that possible? Grateful for any advice.
