Note: Field mapping for MailChimp is now available in Unbounce Labs!  This feature will allow you to send any field from your Unbounce form over to MailChimp. Read all about it in the Unbounce Answers Field Mapping article.

Along with your form data, Unbounce will also pass along three key pieces of information to your MailChimp list:

  1. The Page ID of the Unbounce page that captured the lead

  2. The Variant (letter) that the user saw if your page has more than one variant

  3. The date that the lead was captured (for triggering autoresponders, which is important if you want to immediately send an email to someone who has signed up on your list)

These three data values will only be received in your list if you have set up the fields in MailChimp.

Setting up the custom fields in MailChimp

  1. Log into your MailChimp account

  2. Click on the "Lists" tab

  3. Select the "Forms" link for the list that you're working with

  4. Now you need to add 3 new fields to the form (which will add the fields to your list). For the first field click on "Text" in the sidebar on the left.

  5. Give this field the following values:

    • Field Label: Unbounce Page ID

    • Field Tag: UBPAGEID

    • Field Visibility: hidden (This is very important otherwise your users will see these details in their Welcome Email)

You should see the following in the sidebar:

  6. Click the Save Field button and repeat this process for a second Text field with the following details:

    • Field Label: Unbounce Variant

    • Field Tag: UBVARIANT

    • Field Visibility: hidden

  7. The last field you need to add will be a "Date" field.   When adding the field, make sure you click on "Date" first:

Then update the date field with the following details:

    • Field Label: Unbounce Submitted Date

    • Field Tag: UBDATE

    • Field Visibility: hidden

  8. Now your 3 custom fields are set up and you should start to see these values populated in your lists with new leads. You form should look something like this:

Thanks for these instructions. People need to realize that these instructions are needed to immediately send a email to someone who has signed up on your list.

Is it possible to pass along other fields from your forms to mail chimp to enable the same segmentation functions. I.E. I have asked for the user to input their favourite grocery store and would like to be able to send that along to mailchimp and be able to send a campaign to that group. Is this possible?

Hey William: it sure is! Check out our article on Field Mapping which covers how to use the feature to send arbitrary form fields to your MailChimp account.

Sorry if this is a stupid question. If I want unbounce to pass on Capture Page ID, Variant Letter and Custom Date to my MailChimp Lists, does that mean I have to use mailchimp's 'sign up form embed code' and embed it into my landing page? Or can I simply create a form on unbounce and connect my mailchimp and unbounce accounts together?

Hope that made sense =S

Hi Lenny,

If you follow the instructions on this page, then you can use regular Unbounce forms for your Unbounce page and it will all work.  There is no need for MailChimp's "sign up form embed code".
